Woonsocket Police ID Injured Officer, Shooter

WOONSOCKET, RI—Woonsocket police have identified the officer injured in Monday's shooting on Elm Street. He is Ofc. Travis Young. Young was shot in the thigh. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where doctors described his wound as "serious but non-life threatening," police said. According to police Chief Thomas Oates, Ofc. Young still has a bullet in his leg but was sent home to recover.

The man who allegedly wounded the officer has also been named. He is Tyler C. Chandler, 22, of Portsmouth. He is being charged with Assault with a deadly weapon (5 counts); Discharging a firearm when committing a crime of violence (5 counts); and Carrying a firearm without a license. He will be arraigned in district court on Tuesday.

The incident started around 4:35 a.m. Chandler was seen walking near 182 Cumberland St. and carrying a handgun. He opened fire on officers who tried to catch him. The police returned fire on Cumberland Street and later on Elm Street, where Chandler allegedly shot Ofc. Travis Young in the thigh.

Police later trapped Chandler behind 685 Social St. He was taken into custody after several hours of negotiations, police said.

The officers who fired their weapons are: Detective Sgt. Matthew Richardson; Ptlm. Zachary Bienkiewicz; Ptlm. Brandon Macedo; and Ptlm. Daniel Wild. The state Attorney General's office as well as Woonsocket police are investigating because officers were involved in a shooting. Chandler was not shot, however.
