Admittedly Drunk Man Cooks As Waffle House Employee Sleeps

A Waffle House employee slept as a lone customer cooked his own meal, taking selfies along the way. And then Waffle House thanked him.

WEST COLUMBIA, SC — It was 3 o’clock in the morning Thursday during a slow overnight shift at the Waffle House in West Columbia, South Carolina. It was so sleepy the lone employee decided to take a nap. Alex Bowen, 36, was hungry and, he admits, “pretty inebriated.”

The combination, and especially his "old friend vodka," led Bowen to step up to the grill when he couldn’t find anyone to take his order. He took some pictures while he cooked for himself and posted them on Facebook, where drunken selfies always play well — his especially so.

He’s a genuine internet hero now.

Bowen waited at the register for 10 minutes and also looked outside for an employee, then returned. Bowen "walked right in and waited a few minutes, and then it was go time," he told WIS-TV.

I got hot on the grill with a Texas cheesesteak melt,” he told ABC News.

As Bowen was cooking, he saw the snoozing employee, who continued to sleep as the cheesesteak sizzled. Bowen even tidied up after himself, and though he didn’t initially pay for his munchie attack, he came back later in the day to settle the tab.

Waffle House even thanked him for pointing out the lapse and asked if he would like to become a Waffle House secret shopper.
