Alleged Pitt Student-Killer Pleads Guilty To Other Charges In Myrtle Beach

Pittsburgh police believe Matthew Darby, 21, killed Alina Sheykhet, his ex-girlfriend,​ using a claw hammer and two knives.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Matthew Darby, the man charged with killing a University of Pittsburgh student — his ex-girlfriend — in her off-campus apartment, pleaded guilty to loitering and false information charges in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he was arrested.

Darby's plea Tuesday paves the way for him to be taken to Pittsburgh to face charges that he killed Alina Sheykhet, 20, on Oct. 8.

Pittsburgh police believe Darby, 21, killed Sheykhet using a claw hammer and two knives before fleeing to South Carolina. He was arrested there when a witness reportedly saw Darby tampering with a window at a residence Oct. 11.

Darby was sentenced to time served for the South Carolina charges.

His attorney called the homicide charge "serious," but did not comment on its particulars.
