2007 Citadel Graduate Killed in Afghanistan

Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, died Jan. 10 from injuries suffered during a firefight in Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province.

A 3rd Infantry Division soldier was killed Thursday in Afghanistan, according to a Fort Stewart press release.

Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, a 2007 graduate of The Citadel, died from injuries suffered when his unit was attacked during a patrol in the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan.

Wittman, a native of Chester, Va., was an infantryman assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army in 2008 and arrived at Fort Stewart in February of 2012. His awards included the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, according to the release.

This was Wittman's second deployment.

Sgt. Wittman had previously been awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, according to The Citadel's website. The military college says 18 Citadel graduates have died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
