President Joe Biden hasn’t always lived in the White House, and Chuck Lattif, President of Coastal Premier Homes, an independently owned franchise of Arthur Rutenberg Homes, hasn’t always built custom homes in Charleston. In fact, there was a time when the Biden and Lattif worlds collided, and Lattif worked with the Bidens to site, design, and build a custom home for their family.
Roll back a few of decades to 1990 in Delaware. That’s when Lattif first met the Biden family. He started building custom homes in Bryn Mawr, Penn., in 1995, after a long history of building homes for many of the nation’s largest public builders, including Ryan, Winchester Homes, NVR and Pulte. During this time he built several homes in Delaware, including the home of President Joseph R. Biden.

Lattif transferred to the Washington, DC, market in 1978, and that’s where he became friends with Jim and Michelle Biden, Joe Biden’s brother and former sister-in-law. It happened that both the Bidens and Lattifs moved to Pennsylvania 10 years later, and Lattif had the opportunity to meet then-Senator Joe Biden. In fact, he often ran into him on the train during his occasional commutes to DC. In 1997, Lattif submitted and won a bid to build Joe Biden’s new family home.
Lattif spent eight months working with the Bidens to locate and procure the perfect homesite, a parcel set back from the road on a manmade lake. President Biden designed the home himself, then worked with an architect to get the plans on paper. During the 12-months of construction, he visited as much as time permitted. The result is a classic stucco Colonial home that has stood the test of time. A favorite feature for Lattif is an exquisite wood paneled study installed by custom craftsmen.

“One of the most important things about knowing the Bidens is that they are a very close family,” said Lattif. “And President Biden is the same in person as you see on TV. He’s always meeting people, talking to them and engaging them. He’s a normal, caring and respectful guy.”
Since 2013, Lattif has built custom homes in Charleston and Mt. Pleasant with the same measure of attention he provided the Bidens. The homes families choose in the Low Country typically have a Coastal style rather than the classic Colonial of the Bidens’ choice, but customization and quality remain the cornerstone of each home.
His local work includes 10 homes in Daniel Island, one in Mt. Pleasant, and four more currently or soon to be underway in the Tri-County area. His franchise agreement with Arthur Rutenberg Homes adds an extra level of transparency and a proven system to the building process. The franchise has available home designs that Lattif says are exceptional in their use of space for today’s buyers. Clients may customize plans to meet their needs, have a custom architect design their home from scratch or provide their home design for Coastal Premier Homes to build.
