Police say officers couldn't immediately figure out whether the bones were from a human.

CHARLESTON, SC — Workers found bones that were exposed after a water main broke in Charleston.

Officers couldn't immediately determine if the bones were from a human or an animal, police spokesman Charles Francis said.

The water main broke Wednesday afternoon in a residential area of downtown Charleston near Colonial Lake, Francis said. The roadway over the line collapsed and an intersection had to close.
