Citadel Presented with World Trade Center Section

Lt. Dan Band concert tonight raises money for disabled veterans.

A floor joist that once supported the World Trade Center is now on display as part of a The Citadel 9/11 Memorial.
Members of the New York City Fire Department and the Independence Fund presented the artifact in a ceremony before the university's Friday dress parade.
Chosen by former North Carolina firefighter and Independence Fund volunteer Capt. John L. Woodall, the steel fragment from the Twin Towers will be permanently housed in Capers Hall lobby in memory of the people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.

“This piece is very special,” said Woodall, “because it includes the partial outline of one of the ornate crosses cut from the wreckage of the towers by skilled steelworkers to give to families of the missing.”

The 9/11 memorial will be surrounded by an exhibition of photographs taken by military combat photojournalists after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Located at the Joint Base Charleston, 1st Combat Camera Squadron Flight Commander Capt. Nicholas Mercurio shared these photographs to offer an on-the-ground context to the memorial. This exhibition will be on view in Capers lobby through the end of October.

“Given the emphasis on military duty at The Citadel, and the large numbers of students and faculty who were affected by these attacks, we as a board are honored to support the creation of this memorial,” said Maj. General F. Eli Wishart, Jr.,’63, president of the Advisory Board of The Citadel School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
