College of Charleston Students Debate Controversial Book

Fun Home has caused a stir on campus.

College of Charleston students James Smith and Reagan Chase Kelley talked by video with SC Patch Political Editor Shawn Drury about the book causing controversy at their school, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel.

The book has been assigned as required reading for incoming freshmen. Fun Home is a graphic memoir about Bechdel's life growing up in Central Pennsylvania and discusses complex themes regarding her father's death and her own homosexuality.

A Christian group, Palmetto Family, said Fun Home is not appropriate for freshmen and should not be paid for with the College of Charleston's tax dollars.

Patch interviewed Bechdel on Sunday. See what she had to say about the controversy here.
