Five New Books Everyone Should Read

Summer's almost over, but here are five more books you might be able to squeeze into your summer reading list.

Patch spoke with Blue Bicycle Books owner Jonathan Sanchez to get his list of five books that should be on everyone's reading list.

"Moonrise" by Cassandra King is a contemporary take on Southern Gothic in which a woman finds herself having to live up to the ghost of her new husband's late wife. King is the wife of novelist Pat Conroy.

"Divergent" by Veronica Roth looks at a dystopian future Chicago reminiscent of "The Hunger Games" in that society is divided into rival factions, each embodying a distinct trait. Roth will be visiting Charleston in November for an appearance at Yallfest.

Former Post & Courier reporter and Mount Pleasant resident James Scott takes an in-depth and detailed look at submarine warfare in his nonfiction work "The War Below."

Young readers can fall in love with a new young female detective in J.E. Thompson's "The Girl from Felony Bay," which puts a Nancy Drew like character from the wrong side of the tracks smack in the middle of a mystery stretching back to the Civil War.

Finally for anyone with eclectic tastes is "Will Oldham on Bonnie 'Prince' Billy" edited by Alan Licht is part autobiography, part manifesto, part rambling conversation and all about an intriguing cult figure in independent cinema and music.
