Visitors are once again welcome to Folly Beach County Park.
The park at the southern tip of the island opened Wednesday following the completion of a massive renourishment project pumped 415,000 cubic feet of sand from bottom of the Folly River onto the beach earlier this spring and summer.
The park had been closed since August 2011 when erosion caused by Hurricane Irene scoured away most of the beach there, rendering some of the park facilities unaccessible. In addition to pumping the sand onto the beach, the Charleston County Parks & Recreation Commission also installed a 745-foot long terminal groin designed to ensure the sand remains on the beach
A new parking lot at the park provides space for 400 cars, new portable restroom facilities have been set up and lifeguards are on duty.
Work will continue at the park to re-establish the dunes there, including adding more fencing and planting sea oats.
Park hours are 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. daily through Labor Day. Admission is $8 per vehicle.
