Former Longshormens' Officer Indicted on Embezzlement Charges

A former International Longshoremans’ Association officer has been indicted on federal embezzlement charges, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles. Here's a statement about the charges:

Derrick Alexander, age 55, of Charleston was indicted in federal court on one count each of Embezzlement of Labor Union Assets, Falsification of Required Labor Union Records, and Falsification of Labor Union Annual Financial Reports.
The Embezzlement charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, and the Falsification charges each carry a maximum of up to one year in prison. 

The indictment alleges that between September, 2008, and March, 2010, Alexander was a Secretary-Treasurer with the Longshoremans’ Association AFL-CIO. During that time, the indictment states, Alexander converted to his own use approximately $54,500.00 of the labor organization’s funds.

The Indictment further alleges that Alexander made false representations on required Union reports and filings. The indictment is the result of an investigation conducted by the Department of Labor, Office of Labor-Management Standards. 

Assistant United States Attorney Nathan Williams of the Charleston office is prosecuting the case.
