St. John's FD Breaking Ground for New Stations

A new Headquarters building and an enlarged Station 3 on Wadmalaw Island are in the works at St. John's Fire and Rescue Department.

The St. John's Fire and Rescue Department will be breaking ground on two new construction projects Tuesday.

The Department is replacing its headquarters building on Johns Island and its station on Wadmalaw Island.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday on the lot next to the department's Station 7 at 1142 Main Road, Johns Island. A second ceremony will follow at the site of the new Station 3 on Wadmalaw at 1932 Liberia Road.

The new Headquarters building will replace the department's original Headquarters building constructed in 1961, according to a statement from SJFRD. That building encompasses only 1,500 square feet and was built to accomodate the single full-time firefighter the department had on staff at the time. The new building will cover more than 10,000 square feet and will be able to house all of the Department's staff personnel, which currently operate out of separate facilities. It will also provide space for a community meeting room.

The new Station 3 on Wadmalaw Island will expand the department's footprint on the island from approximately 1,100 square feet to more than 8,000 square feet. It will be able to accomodate up to eight firefighters and house up to four firefighting apparatuses.
