7. Sullivan Island

Take a short drive from the city to visit Sullivan Island. This spot offers a quieter, less tourist-focused place to relax. Take in the beach homes and dine at one of the restaurants on the main drag.

6. Boone Hall Plantation
See one of the country’s oldest working plantations. Its use as a location for TV shows and feature films has made it the most famous plantations in the Southern states. The slave cabins and other buildings are perfectly preserved and have been open to the public since 1956.

5. Charleston City Market
Located in downtown Charleston, this historic spot was built in the early 1800s. First used as a vegetable, seafood, and meat marketplace, it’s open 365 days a year. Shop for souvenirs and stroll amongst the featured local city vendors.

4. Folly Beach
Enjoy the sun and sand at perhaps the most popular beaches in the area. It’s favored for its water sports rentals, burgeoning restaurant scene, and state park. Have breakfast at the Lost Dog Café and eat lunch at Taco Boy for their famous shrimp tacos.

3. Charleston Farmers Market
Each Saturday from April through September, you can shop at this market from 8 am to 2 pm in Marion Square. This family-friendly event includes local artisans, local food, and gift vendors and live music. It’s centrally-located to hotels, museums, shops, and bars.

2. The Fort Sumter National Monument
The first shots of the Civil War were fired here. In 1861 it was commandeered by the Confederate Army and utilized as a Southern stronghold. Take the informative ferry ride and stop in at the Visitor Education Center.

Battery Park is perhaps the best place to truly learn about Charleston. Stroll down East Bay Street and see the historic Battery mansions and Charleston Bay. Enjoy the views of Castle Pinckney and the Sullivan Island Lighthouse too.
