Modern architecture in Charleston has been controversial and misunderstood.  Buildings such as the former Charleston County Library (1958-60), Downtowner Motor Inn (1963), and the work of architect Augustus Constantine along King Street and throughout the peninsula deserve recognition and protection.  Charleston’s historic architecture should be preserved so as to protect the full spectrum of styles and periods.

Greater awareness of the importance of mid-century architecture, often built in the face of widespread and hostile opposition, will lead to greater acceptance of more recent additions to our built environment.  Awareness will be raised through research, documentation, walking tours and advocacy in support of mid-century modern buildings in the Lowcountry.
