Practical Web Site Advice
2 things you should NEVER do
Many of us, as business owners, tend to rush into things because they just need to be done, and we have neither the time nor inclination to deal with it. Web sites are a good example of this. Once the site is up it becomes an organic, ever evolving thing, but getting it set up is where we need to be ever so diligent. Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind:
ALWAYS purchase your domain name. Make sure you own it.
NEVER let anyone purchase the name for you.
If they purchase it through their own account - the name belongs to them - not you - and that can cause major problems down the road.
ALWAYS set up your own hosting account.
NEVER let another individual host your account.
The account host holds the key to your site. You are vulnerable to "hostage taking", nickle & diming, and even a site removal if there is a dispute. Please, please, please set up your own hosting account, give your web designer access to it to build the site. You can always change your log in information to keep anyone out.
A web site is your company's proprietary information and no one should control it but you.
