SWU to remain NCAA Year One Candidacy Member
Southern Wesleyan University will continue in the NCAA membership process during the 2014-15 year.
Southern Wesleyan University will continue in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) membership process during the 2014-15 year and become members of the NCAA II’s Conference Carolinas beginning with play this fall.
“On September 1, 2014, Southern Wesleyan University will enter a new era with the NCAA,” said SWU President Dr. Todd Voss. “As we continue our initial candidacy approval on the road to full membership, we celebrate our first year in Conference Carolinas and our first year exclusively participating in NCAA Division II.”
Conference Carolinas comprises 12 institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. Southern Wesleyan will play a full slate of conference games this year, but will be ineligible to compete in postseason play.
Southern Wesleyan competes in nine women’s and eight men’s varsity intercollegiate athletic sports. The women compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The men compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
The Warriors will continue to be associated with and compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association and will remain eligible to compete in postseason play.
The NCAA’s membership committee recommended that SWU continue on the membership process as a candidacy year one school. That recommendation will be sent to the management council who will notify SWU on July 23 with their final decision.
SWU was accepted into the NCAA II membership process on September 17, 2013 after appealing the original decision from July 2013.
