When a cutting-edge program designed specifically for special needs students is announced, many people automatically assume it must only be available in a large metropolitan area. But next week, theater for special needs students is coming to Easley. Daniel Graybeal, director of the Young Actors Company of Easley at the Fine Arts Center of Easley, has designed the Imagination Stage program specifically for students with special educational needs and developmental delays. This program affords them an opportunity to experience theater and use the skills they learn to help them in their everyday lives.
Benefits of theater classes include:
* improved self-confidence
* increase in language usage
* ability to follow sequential directions
* improved social interactions with peers
* improved ability to express emotions and ideas
* discovery of fun new opportunities in theater
Graybeal, who is also the Theatre Arts teacher at Pickens High School, studied theatrer education and special education at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education and an endorsement in theater. He went on to earn his Masters of Education degree from Southern Wesleyan University. Inspired by a conference at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, DC, Graybeal discovered the possibilities of connecting these two passions in a new and unique way and is looking forward to seeing what happes when children with special needs discover theater.
