Deputies Pledge Help for Back-to-School Traffic

School starts Monday, Aug. 19.

As students, parents and administrators prepare for a new school year, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office is also prepared by positioning additional deputies at schools to help with the congestion of traffic that occurs during the first day of school.

First day of school for Berkeley County public schools is Monday, Aug. 19.

Sheriff Wayne DeWitt's office released a statement Saturday saying he realizes that the overwhelming frustration of congested traffic occurs from first day attendees, student drivers and parents dropping their kids off.  Therefore, deputies will be out in full force to help create a smooth and safe transition for all returning to school by enforcing traffic laws and issuing citations to those who fail to adhere to the rules in the school
zones.  A study conducted in past years indicated the need for traffic control.

On Monday, deputies will be patrolling at the following schools to monitor traffic flow and help assist with other needs of students, parents and administrators:

Cross Elementary
Cross High
Whitesville Elementary
Sedgefield Elementary
Sangaree Elementary
Berkeley Elementary
Macedonia Middle
H.E. Bonner Elementary
College Park Elementary

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office will work with the Berkeley County School District to ensure a safe and operative 2013 school year.  The public is advises to use caution and reduce speed while approaching school zones.
