Suspect Killed After Firing At South Carolina Cops: Sheriff

Officials said one deputy was pinned behind his car for 30 minutes as the suspect fired at him.

HUGER, S.C. — A suspect was killed in a shoot-out with authorities on Tuesday after he fired multiple rounds at deputies, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

A deputy responded to Waterfowl Lane in Huger just before 3:30 p.m. for a report of a disturbance between neighbors. The disturbance was regarding a speeding issue in the neighborhood, investigators believe.

The deputy saw the suspect's car speeding in the roadway and when he tried to stop it, the suspect took cover and started firing at the deputy, the sheriff's office said.

The deputy was pinned behind his car for about 30 minutes as the suspect continued to fire at him, officials said. Multiple agencies responded and tried to establish a perimeter to assist the deputy in getting away. The suspect continued to fire at law enforcement officials, the sheriff's office said.

At one point, the suspect said he was going to surrender but when deputies got close, the suspect fired again, officials said.

The suspect was eventually shot and killed, the sheriff's office said. The coroner's office will release the suspect's identity.

All law enforcement officials were unharmed.
