Hurricane Irma South Carolina: Berkeley County Schools Close

BREAKING: Deadly Hurricane Irma is on a projected path to reach the lowcountry of South Carolina beginning early Monday morning.

MONCKS CORNER, SC — Schools up and down South Carolina's coastline are closing in anticipation of Hurricane Irma, and the Berkeley County School District is no exception.

District’s leaders decided to close all schools Friday to give students, staff, and their families ample time to prepare for Irma. Schools will also be closed Monday and Tuesday.

All after school day care programs will also be canceled Friday, as well as after-school activities and sporting events scheduled for Friday. Rescheduling information will be released later.

Essential personnel are to report Friday morning and will be released at 2 p.m. to prepare schools. This includes maintenance and facilities, technology, school administrators, superintendent’s cabinet and their designated support staff, school custodians and cafeteria managers. "District officials are continuing to work closely with Berkeley County Emergency Preparedness Center to monitor the hurricane and potential impact on the county. Officials are also receiving regular updates from the National Weather Service," the district said in a statement on its website.

Safety and security is the district's highest priority, officials said.

Deadly Hurricane Irma, the most powerful Atlantic storm ever recorded, is on a projected path to reach the lowcountry of South Carolina beginning early Monday morning, forecasts say. The storm is blamed for at least 10 deaths so far and was following a path that may have dire implications for Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
