South Carolina Septuagenarians Tussle Over Free Cheese Samples
Two men in their 70s quarreled after one cut in line for free cheese samples. The situation fell apart in the free cheeseburger line.

GREENVILLE, SC — Two septuagenarians got into a fight while waiting — not so patiently — in line for free samples at a Greenville Costco, according to a recent police report. It started as the two men, 70 and 72, were lined up to get a taste of cheese and ended when one of them allegedly slapped the other while they were in another line for free cheeseburger samples.
According to a Greenville Police Department report of the July 26 incident, the older man “cut in line, took some cheese and took off.” That irked the 70-year-old man, who was still harboring ill feelings when they both showed up in line for cheeseburger samples.
He told the 72-year-old that “he could get in front of him because he knew he would just cut in line anyway,” according to the report detailed by The State.

Apparently undeterred by the rebuke, the older man said, “I will do it again” and told the 70-year-old, “You’re a jerk.”

The situation went downhill from there. The woman handing out the cheeseburger samples told police the 72-year-old hit the 70-year-old on the side of the head and “it sounded very loud” and caused his hat and glasses to fly off.
The 70-year-old said he didn’t know whether the other guy hit him with a closed-fist punch or slapped him, but that it sounded like a slap, according to a report by television station WYFF.
The older man had left by the time police arrived, but officers tracked him down after getting the license plate number on his SUV. Contacted later by phone, he admitted his involvement, police said.
He reportedly told police he “hit the man’s hat off his head after the man got in his face and he felt that the man was going to hit him because the man was balling his fist.”
Police said the two men’s stories didn’t match and they planned to review surveillance video to find out what happened. A police spokeswoman told The State no arrests had been made.
