The most popular boy’s name in South Carolina in 2020 was William. The name is of German origin. It’s derived from the name Willahelm, meaning “will helmet.”

As many as 19,784 boys were born in South Carolina last year. Of them, 279, or 1.41%, were given the name William.

The second and third most popular boy names in the state in 2020 were Noah and James, respectively. About 1.39% of boys born in the state, or 275 baby boys, were named Noah. About 1.25%, or 248 newborn boys, were named James.

The most popular girl’s name in South Carolina in 2020 was Ava. The name is of Latin origin, meaning “life; bird; water, island.”

As many as 17,123 girls were born in South Carolina last year. Of them, 254 baby girls, or 1.48%, were given the name Ava.

The second and third most popular girl names in the state in 2020 were Olivia and Charlotte, respectively. About 1.35% of girls born in South Carolina, or 231 baby girls, were named Olivia. About 1.16%, or 198 newborn girls, were named Charlotte.
