Lexington-Richland School District Five students scored the highest ACT scores in the Midlands and among the highest in the state, according to new data released Wednesday.
District Five’s Class of 2013 had an average composite score of 22.1, which is 1.7 points above the state average of 20.4 and 1.2 points above the national average of 20.9. The district had the third-highest composite score in the state.
“Retaining such high scores is a significant accomplishment considering the high percentage of students taking the ACT in our district," District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said. "At 55 percent, we test more students than many other school districts. All this illustrates that our teachers are committed to student success and making sure they are prepared for a great career or college.”
The ACT exam is a national college admissions examination that consists of subject area tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science. The test includes multiple-choice questions with a highest possible score of 36. It is offered six times per year in the U.S., and is usually taken during a student's junior or senior year of high school.
The new ACT data mirrors other recent reports, placing District Five among the best in the state for academic rigor and preparing students for college.
