Report: Irmo Police Officer Shoots, Kills Dog

The owners were not at home during the incident.

Irmo Police Chief Brian Buck said the shooting of a family's 4-year-old dog on Monday by one of his officers was self-defense, according to a report from WIS-TV.

An officer responding to a report of a dog chasing a jogger on Charring Cross Road in the Old Friarsgate neighborhood shot the dog after it "charged at him," the report said. The officer was attempting to go to the front door of a home to find the dog's owner. The owners were not at home during the incident.

According to report from The State, the dog's owner could be fined up to $1,000 for "letting the dog roam." The citation was issued by Richland County.
