Community to Gather for Prayer at 9/11 Monument

A prayer gathering is being held at the 9/11 monument at 6 p.m. at the Lexington County Judicial Center.

Community members will gather for prayer Tuesday evening at the 9/11 monument near the .

The "Cry Out America" prayer gathering is part of a national effort to start a spiritual awakening across the country. This is the fifth year the Awakening America Alliance has helped organize the prayer gatherings. 

Executive Director Billy Wilson says choosing Sept. 11 to pray for spiritual awakening is symbolic.

“In many ways what happened on Sept. 11, 2001 signaled what would take place in the 21st century. We saw the collapse of things we thought were certain, of things we thought would never fall, and we saw an invasion of darkness and fear in our nation that we had never experienced," Wilson said.

"Some days I wake up and ask myself ‘How in the world did America get in this shape? How did we become this dark during my generation?’," he said. "I believe that can change, but it can only change if the people of God unite in prayer.”

More than 850 counties are participating in "Cry Out America." 

The rain location for the Lexington County gathering is . The gathering lasts from 6 to 7 p.m.
