Goodland Swamp is mentioned many times in colonial records but recently a new discovery came to be.
On the road from Long Canes to Orangeburg an old Indian trail a series of springs representing a colonial watering place provided rest and water for weary travelers including British troops and American Patriots prior and during the Rev War struggle for the fort at Ninety Six. Old maps and documents have this location as the Indian Head.
In 2015 a SCDAH approved historical marker was installed honoring not only the Indian Head but also the Middle Road. The installed marker joins Hernando DeSoto' visit as two historical events that happened near this sleepy town of Perry.
