Lexington Woman Charged After Infant Hospitalized with Skull, Rib Fractures

Authorities think the child suffered the injuries to the skull, rib and clavicle between June 29 and Sept. 22.

A Lexington woman was arrested Wednesday after the two-month-old she cared for was admitted to an area hospital with serious injuries including skull and rib fractures.

Amberly B. Lomax, 22, was charged with inflicting great bodily injury upon a child, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. Lomax was being held Thursday at the Lexington County Detention Center on a $175,000 bond.

The two-month-old girl was treated at a Lexington Medical Center urgent-care facility and later taken to Palmetto Health Richland’s Children’s Hospital on Sept. 22, where she continues to undergo medical treatment for a skull fracture, 13 rib fractures and a fractured clavicle, according to a sheriff’s department release.

Authorities think the child suffered the injuries between June 29 and Sept. 22. 

Lomax was responsible for caring for the girl at the time she suffered the injuries, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said. She could not explain to detectives how the girl was injured.

The infant is in emergency protective custody with the S.C. Department of Social Services and is expected to fully recover from her injuries, according to the release.

Lomax is facing 20 years in prison.
