1. South Carolina may be known for starting the Civil War, but did you know that the state (or, rather, colony) was home to the most Revolutionary War battles of all the 13 original colonies? Delve into the state and local history of that war in the area's newest museum —  The Library and Museum of Revolutionary War History, at 110 Academy St., in Simpsonville.

The museum is open most Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 864-235-6527 for more info. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

2. Beat the heat! You don't have to drive outside the state, or even Greenville County, for a day of refreshing waterpark fun. It's right in your backyard at Discovery Island Waterpark inside Southside Park at 417 Baldwin Road in Simpsonville. The watermark is open daily through Sept. 2. 3. Discover the artist inside you — and enjoy a glass of wine (or two) while you do it. All Occasion Celebrations, at 108 North Main Street in Mauldin, will be offering its "Murals and Merlot Painting Instruction Class" this Thursday evening for $35. Details here.

4. What better way to celebrate summer than to rock out with the  "hottest band in the world," KISS? The legendary rock band, along with opening act, Leogun, will invade the Charter Amphitheater in Simpsonville's Heritage Park on Aug. 13. For tix, click here.

5. Want something a little more sedate? Then head out to Lake Conestee Nature Park in Mauldin for a day of bird watching, a picnic, and a peaceful nature stroll along the park's easy-walking trails. Info here.
