Christ Church Drops Heartbreaker in Girls AA Soccer Finals
Tiebreaking penalty kick lifts Academic Magnet.
Christ Church Episcopal School was two minutes away from back-to-back state girls soccer championships and doing everything possible to turn away a persistent Academic Magnet attack. But Raptors star Kallie Peurifoy converted a steal and tied the score at one, dashing the Cavaliers hopes for the moment.
After two 10-minute overtimes and two 5-minute sudden death periods did not break the tie, the match went to penalty kicks. Each team converted their first five attempts, but Christ Church missed its sixth. The Raptors' Maegan Reed converted her penalty kick and give Academic Magnet the championship and Christ Church heartbreak.
Academic Magnet was the aggressor for much of the first 40 minutes, but Christ Church got the early lead 1-0 when sophomore Sitton Furman blasted a shot beyond the reach of the Raptors goalkeeper and into the top left of the net.
