Duke Energy Seeking More Money From Customers

On top of rate hike, the utility is seeking permission to pass along higher fuel costs to consumers.

On top of a pending rate increase for customers, Duke Energy is now seeking permission from the S.C. Public Service Commission to charge customers more for its fuel.

If approved by the S.C. Public Service Commission, the base rate for a typical residential customer for 1,000 kilowatt-hours will go up by 7.5 percent, or $7.52, in September to $107.97 monthly.

The higher fuel cost — $7.62 — will be added in the October billing, if approved by the commission, according to a report by GSA Business.

In 2014, the monthly base rate for the 540,000 customers in South Carolina increases by another 2.58 percent, or $2.79, which, with the fuel cost increase, will total $118.38 monthly, the business paper reported.
