The game ended early after it was announced that Rouse had died.

A Facebook post from the school said that Friday's game was homecoming for the school.

A large crowd, including team members still in uniform, gathered later outside the emergency room at Carolina Pines Medical Center and consoled one another as they waited to express their grief to Rouse's family.

Mayor Mel Pennington, who ordered flags be flown at half-mast, urged residents "to take a moment and ask God to be with this family, to help them find peace in this chaos, and to help this team deal with the grief and shock of losing a brother."

As news of Rouse's death spread, many friends and teammates honored Rouse on social media.

A Facebook fan page was set up in remembrance of Rouse; it had nearly 5,700 fans by early Saturday morning. Meanwhile, hundreds of others tweeted about Rouse.

Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee said in a statement late Friday that an autopsy will be conducted Saturday to determine the cause of death, though one newspaper tweeted that Rouse died as a result of cardiac arrest.
