Sullivan's Island Polar Bear Plunge

The 2013 Dunleavys Polar Bear Plunge marks the 19th year locals have celebrated the new year by taking a run into the chilly water on Sullivan's Island.

The event raises money for the Special Olympics. Participants line up on the beach at 12:30 p.m., but participants gather around 11 a.m. on Middle Street in front of Dunleavys Pub for drinks and socializing.

Thousands turn out for the event each year. Parking is hard to come by and drinking and partying are par for the course, though families are also welcome.
