
Today is National Lighthouse Day. You can get in on the fun with a celebration at Sullivan's Island today or head out to explore some of the region's still-operating lighthouses. Here's a list of houses within driving distance of Mount Pleasant.Â
1. Sullivan's Island Lighthouse
The last lighthouse built by the federal government, the Sullivan's Island Lighthouse has a unique triangular shape meant to withstand high winds.2. Cape Romain
Two brick lighthouses sit on Lighthouse Island southeast of McClellanville at Cape Romain. Both are part of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Tours are held several times yearly.Â3. Georgetown
Located North Island near the entrance to Winyah Bay, a lighthouse has been in this location since the 1790s. Boat tours leave daily from Georgetown, but visitors are not allowed inside the Georgetown Lighthouse.4. Morris Island
A preservation group has spent millions of dollars just to keep this historic lighthouse from washing into the ocean just off Folly Beach. Today, a coffer dam is supporting the lighthouse. Read more about the preservation work, see a live web cam.5. Daufuskie Island (Haig Point)
