Police Chief Entering the Ministry

Chief will retire at the end of 2012 to pursue religious calling.

When Mount Pleasant Police Chief Harry Sewell ends his lenghty law-enforcement career at the end of 2012, he plans to become a minister.

The town announced Sewell's Dec. 31 retirement in a statement Monday morning. The chief announced his plans later in the day.

"Over the last year or so, I have been getting a strong call to go into the ministry to serve my Lord, Jesus Christ; therefore, I am going to pursue this calling," Chief Sewell wrote.

Sewell, who is known for his deep religious beliefs, said he wants to speak to the Mayor and Town Council before publicly discussing specifics about his future. The council meets Tuesday evening, though personnel discussions can be closed to the public, according to state open meetings laws.

Over his 22 years, Sewell has led the department as Mount Pleasant's population exploded. He earned praise from Town Administrator Eric DeMoura for his leadership.

"His professionalism and unwavering commitment to serving the citizens of Mount Pleasant is something we are truly thankful for and something we will undoubtedly miss," DeMoura said. "Harry is a great man and a top-notch police chief – the finest."

A search for a replacement will focus on internal candidates, DeMoura said. But he'll present the topic for discussion with the town council on Tuesday.

Over the summer, Sewell shuffled his top commanders following the retirement of Maj. Frank Riccio, who left following a DUI arrest. Sewell's new organization chart includes two majors, two captains and four lieutenants.

"I believe that we possess in-house the talent we need to fill Harry’s position and to maintain the department’s long standing tradition of excellence," DeMoura said "I plan to discuss with Town Council our selection for Harry’s replacement immediately."

Department heads, such as the fire and police chief, are selected and hired by DeMoura, according to the town's charter, though the Mayor shares some administrative powers with DeMoura.

Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at town hall at 100 Ann Edwards Drive.
