Hello, Myrtle Beach! Today is Monday, June 28, 2021 and as we head into the July 4th holiday next weekend, let's take a look at the news. Today, you'll hear from me with an update on the post office fire in Longs, a fun kids camp modeled after "Survivor", our local wildlife rehabilitation center is closing, another Myrtle Beach couple celebrates a long marriage by renewing their vows, and tourism on the Grand Strand is surging.

  1. Residents in Longs are expressing concern over their mail after a fire destroyed the USPS facility in town over the weekend. The North Myrtle Beach facility is temporarily servicing Longs after the USPS suspended service in town, but NMB is 13 miles away and that drive is difficult for some folks to manage. Door delivery will continue uninterrupted until the postal service can rebuild. (WMBF)
  2. A North Myrtle Beach high schooler, Shaw Ashley, has created a Christian-themed summer camp modeled after the "Survivor" TV show. It's a wat to get kids socializing and build confidence. A former contestant from the show is scheduled to speak to the youngsters who participate. The camp is hosted by Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church. (WPDE)
  3. The only wildlife rehab center in the Grand Strand area has announced it's closing its doors due to a lack of available land in the area, as well as a high volume of animals being taken in. Kimberly Cerimele, Executive Director of Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center broke the news in a statement on Facebook on Friday. There will be a GoFundMe set up, but there are no details available yet. (WPDE)
  4. Edward and Dorothy Alber met in 1941 at a roller rink when they were teenagers. The Myrtle Beach couple, now in their 90s, will renew their wedding vows for their 75th anniversary this week in a private ceremony at their home. The two say their secret to a happy marriage is that they take care of each other and have never been separated. Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Alber! (WBTW)
  5. CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, Karen Riordan, said recently that a strong surge in tourism is happening now on the Grand Strand. Riordan also said that TripAdvisor had named Myrtle Beach one of the top most searched destinations in June, and this is the first time in history that our area has been at the top of the leaderboard of destinations.
