Greetings, Myrtle Beach! It's Tuesday, June 29, 2021. Today, I'll tell you about an HCPD officer who was involved in a fatal car crash, Democrat Joe Cunningham's run for governor, an Horry County pair charged with homicide of an infant, a tropical weather system causing unsettled patterns, and SNAP is ending... just like that.

Today's top 5 news stories for Myrtle Beach:

  1. A fatal late-night crash in Horry County took the life of one driver, while an on-duty Horry County Police officer sustained minor injuries and was given medical attention. The incident is under investigation by the SCHP Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team. There are no other details available at the moment. (WPDE)
  2. Joe Cunningham took a spin over Myrtle Beach on the Slingshot ride before talking to a crowd regarding his upcoming run for governor of South Carolina in 2022. Cunningham, a Democrat, feels he has a good chance to win. The candidate was victorious in 2018 when he won the 1st Congressional District seat, becoming the first Democrat in over 40 years to represent the mostly Republican district. We're sure to see more of Cunningham over the next year. (MyrtleBeachOnline.com)
  3. Two Conway residents were charged with homicide by child abuse and unlawful neglect of a child after an infant died in their custody back in May. Other minors also in the couple's custody tested positive for heroin and marijuana. The two had custody of seven children, total. Both adults are incarcerated without bond. (MyHorryNews.com)
  4. Tropical Depression Four — a tropical weather system — caused some minor impacts here on Monday. Heavy downpours and 25 mph wind gusts were felt across the Grand Strand region, as well as dangerous rip currents and high seas along the coast. Unsettled weather is expected to continue through at least Thursday. (WMBF)
  5. The Emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is scheduled to end August 1, says the DSS. The program was created in March 2020 to help qualified households during the pandemic. The state will transition back to regular SNAP benefits, during the month of July. (WPDE)
