"Sharknado" to Touch Down in Simpsonville

The campy, made-for-TV movie is scheduled to appear on the big screen locally and elsewhere next Friday.

If you missed the SyFy channel's "Sharknado" when it aired recently, never fear. The campy, B-movie is set for big-screen treatment nationwide at Regal Cinemas locations, including The Great Escape theater in Simpsonville.

If you're unfamiliar with the movie's (ahem) plot, it's about tornados that suck up killer sharks from the Pacific and dump them on land, creating chaos and lots of bloody mayhem.

The film was widely panned by critics, and drew a modest 1.37 million viewers, according to Nielsen, when it aired on cable television earlier this month. But those who did view it took to social media in droves, especially Twitter, making it a social media phenomenon, with a total of 387,000 online comments flooding social networks during the telecast.

Despite the relatively tepid viewership, a sequel to the film, which starred Tara Reid and Ian Ziering, is already in the works.

In the meantime, you can see the original in all its ridiculous glory on the big screen locally at The Great Escape, Friday, Aug. 2 at midnight, as well as the Regal Hollywood Stadium 20 in Magnolia Park on Woodruff Road.
