Simpsonville Roads Being Repaired Under City-State Deal
Patch jobs being done as part of deal transferring some state-controlled secondary roads to city.

A number of road repairs are underway or planned in Simpsonville as part of a deal transferring the roads from state to city control.
The roads set for repair include Beattie Street; East College Street from Northeast Main Street to Church Street; East Trade Street from Cook Street to Southeast Main Street; Fernwood Road from Hedge Street to Aster Drive; Fernwood Road from Southeast Main to Hedge Street; Morton Avenue; West College Street, West Curtis Street; and West Trade Street, according to a Greenville News report.
The city will also take control of the following roads under the deal: Seminole Drive from Neely Ferry Road to Cheyenne Drive; Green Street; Morgan Circle from Sunrise Avenue to Northeast Main Street; Sunrise Avenue; Jones Avenue; Aster Drive from Curtis Street to Fernwood Road; Aster Drive from Fernwood Road to Hillpine Drive; Richardson Street Extension from Cox Street to Southeast Main Street; Cox Street, Woodside Circle, and Hunter Street from North Pliney Circle to Jonesville Road.

The state maintains more than 41,400 miles of roadways, making it the fourth-largest state-owned road network in the nation. By transferring control of less-travelled roadways to localities such as Simpsonville, secondary-road repair that might otherwise languish is liable to be done quicker, officials said.
“This benefits the needs of the state, definitely the needs of the citizens of the city,” City Administrator Russ Hawes told the paper.

Under the deal with the state Department of Transportation, Simpsonville will take on 5.4 miles of state roads in exchange for 2.49 miles of work, the report said.
The $785,000 cost of repairs will come from SCDOT and gas-tax proceeds by the Greenville Legislative Delegation Transportation Committee.
