Pinewood Preparatory School’s three-time SCISA State Champion High School Quiz Bowl Team traveled to Washington, D.C. recently to compete in the thirty-first annual National Academic Championship. The team ended up placing in the top ten teams nationally.
Over 130 teams from across the nation competed in two preliminary rounds, held in New Orleans and the District of Columbia. Out of the 65 teams in their division, Pinewood won six rounds to make it to the playoffs, where they beat the seventeenth-ranked team from Spring Park, Pa. and the first-ranked team from Hastings, Pa. The Pinewood team was eventually eliminated in their third match by the sixth-ranked team from Deer Park, Okla. Pinewood was one match away from competing in the national finals.
This was Pinewood's first time participating in this invitational competition. "Overall, the tournament was a great experience and a wonderful opportunity to meet other academic teams from around the nation,” said team co-captain Marshall Simmons. “As a team, we had a great time and set the bar even higher for next year." The team’s performance earned them an automatic invitation to next year’s competition.
