Coroner: Neglected 104-Year-Old Dies

Son of elderly woman now charged with abuse or neglect resulting in death.

The 61-year-old Spartanburg man charged with neglect of a vulnerable adult after authorities found his 104-year-old mother reportedly with open wounds across her body now faces a more serious charge after she died Thursday, WYFF reports.  

Demetra Leventis died Thursday, two weeks after she was found at a Hillbrook Drive home by a home health nurse with open wounds on her body that reportedly had maggots in them. 

The elderly woman's son, George Leventis, is now charged with abuse or neglect resulting in death.

Her son, 61-year-old George Leventis, was charged with neglect of a vulnerable adult after his mother was found sitting in her own waste on Dec. 4.

Police went to the home on Hillbrook Drive after a home health nurse said she found Leventis with open wounds on her body containing what the nurse believed to be maggots.  The nurse said it was her first visit to the home.

George Leventis denied abusing or neglecting his mother and said that he loved her and had been taking care of her since 1983.

Spartanburg Public Safety Capt. Regina Nowak said Friday the charge in this case will be upgraded to abuse or neglect resulting in death.
