New Ladder Truck Adds To Greer Fire Department's Tools To Protect Citizens And Businesses

The 100-foot ladder proves an additional 30 feet of reach compared to its predecessor.

The truck, built by Pierce Manufacturing in Wisconsin at a cost of just under $1.2 million, replaces the department’s 22-year-old ladder truck that has been out of service for the past three years.

“We have buildings of different sizes — not just height, it’s also about reach. It allows us more ways to access a fire safely or to make rescues,” Fire Chief Dorian Flowers said. “We can also use it for high-angle rescues or below-grade rescues.”

The 100-foot ladder proves an additional 30 feet of reach compared to its predecessor and is much more maneuverable, according to Chief Flowers. Advances in technology, such as on-board cameras and sensors allow the truck to park and operate more safely.

“We have a very robust automatic aid program with neighboring departments. We’ve had ladder trucks around us even though we didn’t have one in the City,” Chief Flowers said. “We’ve provided other agencies a response for a rescue truck that they didn’t have and they’ve responded to us with a ladder truck that we didn’t have.”

With a recommendation from staff, the purchase price was approved by Greer City Council to further ensure the safety of residents.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our administration and council. These are large investments into the safety of the citizens of Greer. Without their support this would not be possible so we feel very lucky to have that,” Chief Flowers said.
