PHOTO GALLERY: Hundreds Turn Out for Victoria Humphries Vigil

She may have only been 16 years old, but the impact she made in the lives of family and friends was evident Thursday night.

Hundreds gathered at Otter Creek Water Park for a candlelight vigil to honor the life of Victoria Humphries.

The daughter of John and Vicki Humphries of Taylors and Kristina Lee Humphries of Greer, she was a lifeguard at Otter Creek and was known for her warm hugs and bright smile.

Family and friends gathered in silence at Otter Creek, focusing on a wreath of flowers and a single lit candle floating in the pool of water. Just before 9 p.m., the still of the waters was broken as Humphries' sister, Alida, who also works as a lifeguard at the park, waded into the water to light the first candle.

As she made her way back to the side of the pool, she lit the first candle outstretched in her direction.

From candletip to candletip, the flame would spread throughout the crowd until the pool glowed from all points.

After a song and few personal remarks, there was silence.

The occasional chirp of a cricket or the call of a tree frog broke the silence. Friends held onto friends as they wiped away tears, but none of them seemed to be in a hurry to leave.

Funeral services for Humphries will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Taylors First Baptist Church with burial at Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Taylors.

The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. at the church.
