Supermoon Rising Over Greer-Taylors This Weekend

Look to the skies Saturday night to catch a glimpse.

So will the skies over the Greer-Taylors area cooperate so we can all witness the most super "supermoon" this year?

The view in Greer and Taylors could be slightly skewed. The weather forecast is calling for partly to mostly cloudy skies for much of the overnight hours June 22-23, when the moon will appear super large and super close to Earth. There also is a chance of scattered thunderstorms Saturday night before changing to rain showers Sunday morning.

On June 22-23, the moon is at perigee — its closest approach to Earth, according to Astronomy magazine's website. The moon will be just 221,824 miles away from us, compared with its "typical" distance of about 238,000 miles.

So what's the best time to see this Supermoon? EarthSky says the moon will officially be full at 7:32 a.m. EDT Sunday. The actual perigee takes place about 20 minutes prior, according to Astronomy.

Don't want to get up at 7:32 a.m. to see the supermoon? The moon will look just about as full the evening of June 22, according to Astronomy, and it'll be full the evening of June 23.

EarthSky says this is the closest the moon will be to Earth until Aug. 10, 2014.

Take some photos of your view of the moon this weekend, and upload them to this post. We can't wait to see them!

Happy skywatching!
