Victim In Greer Hostage Situation Identified

Kenneth Darrell Horton found dead at Greer home.

The man found dead in a home by Greenville County S.W.A.T. team members Sunday night during a hostage situation has been identified.

At roughly 9:30 p.m. on Sunday the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office received a disturbance call at 4307 Skyland Drive in Greer, and later received a second call from a woman at the residence who said a suspect had fired into the home and gained entry there. A hostage situation ensued.

After negotiations over the phone proved unsuccessful, S.W.A.T. personnel broke into the residence, and suspect immediately opened fire on them. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was hit, though his condition has not yet been released. Two deputies were hit.

Greenville County Deputy Coroner Barry Wright identified the man found dead inside as 49-year-old Kenneth Darrell Horton, of Greer. Horton is believed to have been shot in the chest during the initial incident earlier in the night, and not during the shootout. All told, five people inside the house were injured.

Lt. Mike Hildebrand of the GCSO said one child, not two as originally reported, was taken from the home. One deputy was shot in the left arm and another in the right leg during the incident. Both have been treated at Greenville Memorial Hospital and are expected to recover.
