Wade Hampton Briefly Locked Down After Armed Robbery Attempt

A person with a knife cut a K-Mart employee on Wade Hampton Boulevard and fled the scene.

Wade Hampton High School was briefly put on lockdown until a suspect with a knife was apprehended nearby. 

Laura Campbell, spokesperson for the Greenville County Sheriff's Office, said that at 10:07 a.m. a person whose identity has not yet been released was approached by a loss prevention employee at the K-Mart on Wade Hampton Boulevard after he was seen shoplifting. 

The suspect, attempting to leave the scene on a bicycle, allegedly waved a knife at the employee, cutting his arm slightly, before fleeing on foot. He was caught seven minutes later at the Red Lobster near Wade Hampton High School.

Oby Lyles, communications director for the Greenville County School District, confirmed The Fine Arts Center and Wade Hampton High were both very briefly placed on lockdown during the incident. 

The suspect was charged with armed robbery. Patch will provide his identity and mugshot once they are released.
