Wade Hampton Fireman Accepts 9Round Challenge
In an effort to raise money for S.C. Firefighters' Association and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office WAR Fund, 9Round Taylors put clients in bunker gear and helmets and then put them through a 30-minute "public servants" workout.
In a two-day event called "Guns & Hoses," clients at 9Round kickboxing gyms throughout Greenville found a whole new respect for local first responders.
Pedro Mateo started at 9Round Taylors two weeks ago, but it wasn't until he walked in the gym Friday afternoon that he was in training to be a firefighter. Bedecked in a firefighter's helmet and coat, Mateo worked his way through the 30-minute circuit training using the tools of the trade.
"I wouldn't want this job," Mateo said, as he soaked up the heat outside while climbing a ladder and doing calf raises. "But it is a good workout."

The event was an opportunity for the community to give back and give honor to a group that doesn’t seem to receive as much attention during the year, said Angela Jackson, manager of 9Round in Taylors.
Greenville County Deputy Trey Wyatt served as a guest trainer during the event. Wyatt joined the gym in February and has lost about 30 pounds.

"It's been fun to be on this side as a trainer during this event," Wyatt said. "It gives me a new appreciation for what they put me through each day, but hopefully it will give the public appreciation for what we do."
Wade Hampton fireman Travis Nelson decided to accept the challenge.
Dressed in full turnout gear and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus Nelson kicked and punched his way to the end, even after his air tank ran out.
Nelson said it was a tough workout, but said it didn't compare to the real job. (Check out his 9Round workout in the attached video.)
Community members were able to try out the gym during the free event which featured cop/firefighter-themed drills.
9Round locations at Butler Road in Mauldin, Harrison Bridge Road in Simpsonville, Pelham Road, Augusta Road and Old Buncombe Road in Greenville.
Money raised during the event will be split between the S.C. Firefighters' Association and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office WAR Fund.
