Toys R Us Closings: Nashville Location Axed In Bankruptcy

A South Nashville Babies R Us is one of 182 Toys R Us stores closing nationwide as part of a bankruptcy re-organization.

NASHVILLE, TN -- Toys R Us plans to close 182 locations nationwide as part of its plan to emerge from bankruptcy and a Middle Tennessee location is on the list.

The Babies R Us location at 5731 Nolensville Pike in Nashville is among those the company wants to close, according to court documents. One other Tennessee location - on Polo Grounds Road in Memphis - is also on the list. The company would shutter these and the other 180 stores slated to close between February and April.

The plan requires the court's approval.

The company said a number of its existing locations will be co-branded as Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores, according to CNBC. The retailer filed for bankruptcy protection about four months ago. The company, based in Wayne, N.J., has about 880 stores in the U.S. The number of closures nationwide are about 20 percent of its U.S. stores, according to court documents filed in a Virginia bankruptcy court.

David Brandon, chairman and CEO of the toy retailer, said the brand is reinventing itself, and that requires some "tough decisions about our priorities and focus.

"The reinvention of our brands requires that we make tough decisions about our priorities and focus," Brandon said in a letter posted on the company's website late Tuesday.

Going-out-of-business sales at the to-be-closed stores will begin in February.
