Trash Stays On the Curb for Thousands of Nashvillians

Metro's trash contractor says holidays and weather have delayed collection for nearly 10,000 people.

NASHVILLE, TN — Trash has gone uncollected for thousands people across Davidson County as increased holiday volume and slippery roads has delayed pick-up, according to a garbage contractor.

A spokesman for Red River Waste Solutions told WKRN that only 10 percent of customers they serve have been without service, but with 96,000 customers, that's still a significant number.

"We understand it’s frustrating when your garbage is delayed, but we will get it," Steve Smith, Red River’s Regional Market Area Director, told WKRN. "These guys are out working in cold weather, wet weather, and they’re doing the best they can."

Smith said the back-up began with the typical high-volume post-holiday pick-ups and was exacerbated by last week's winter weather. Smith said the company has ramped up pick-up hours, with some crews working as late as 10 p.m. and on weekends to make up the difference.

Most affected neighborhoods are in Donelson, Priest Lake and Antioch, but Metro Public Works told the station they've also received complaints west of town, in West Meade, for example.
