Assessors selected by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA), will examine all aspects of the Brentwood Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services through a remote assessment July 6th-8th, 2021.  Verification by these assessors that the Brentwood Police Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. The Brentwood Police Department received their initial accredited status in November of 1989 and has since successfully achieved re-accredited status on seven occasions, most recently being in November of 2017.  The Brentwood Police Department is the most tenured accredited agency in the state of Tennessee.

The Brentwood Police Department must comply with all mandatory standards applicable to this agency by size and function and at least 80% of all other than mandatory standards to achieve re-accredited status.  “Involvement in the accreditation process is strictly voluntary” stated Chief Jeff Hughes. “Our department has chosen to comply with the accreditation standards, and in doing so, the Brentwood Police Department has developed modern and up to date policies and procedures and has established itself as a professional law enforcement organization”. “By complying with the accreditation standards, the likelihood of civil litigation has been greatly reduced, personnel have specific written guidelines to follow, and we can deliver the level of law enforcement services the citizens of the City of Brentwood deserve”. “The accreditation process requires a total commitment by all personnel of the department”.

The assessors will review written materials and interview individuals to verify compliance with applicable standards.  The assessors are:

Once the assessors complete their review of our agency, they will submit a detailed report to the commission.  Chief Hughes and other members of this agency will then go before a sub-committee at the national CALEA conference in Jacksonville, Florida in November 2021 to answer questions regarding the final report.  This sub-committee will ultimately make a recommendation regarding our accredited status to the full commission.

The accreditation cycle is moving from a three-year cycle to a four-year cycle, during which time the agency must submit annual reports and submit to annual file reviews to prove continued compliance with current accreditation standards.
