Wow House: Historic Liberty Hill Farm

WOW House: For more than 200 years, families have made their home at Liberty Hill Farm. Who's next?

BRENTWOOD, TN -- Liberty Hill Farm, one of Williamson County's oldest homes, is on the market for its latest owner.

The core of the home, a log cabin built in 1796, remains, now as a breakfast nook. Originally the land was deeded to a North Carolina Revolutionary War veteran, who himself sold it to a speculator, who then died before he could subdivide it. History and legend disagree a bit on who built the original log cabin - some say William Edmundson of the eponymous pike, others say John Hamer, in whose family the property remained through the 19th century. Hamer had three daughters, two of whom died as teens. The third, Jane, never married, but was nevertheless known as the Widow Hamer through her life. She ran the plantation until her death in 1879, often lending money to neighbors -- and then foreclosing on them when she wasn't repaid. She gave some land to five of her former slaves who remained on to work at the plantation after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Though the house maintains the original cabin, the bulk of it was built in the 1850s; a den was added in the 1990s. It sits on 15 acres, which includes a barn and riding trails.
